About Mrs. Ruiz

ruiz-headshot-site“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.”
~ John Dewey ~

In my classroom it is of the utmost importance that each child is challenged academically and respected by both peers and adults. I take my responsibility as an educator very seriously. I recognize that it is my job not only to educate my students according to state mandated standards, but that I am a part of their social and emotional development as well. I strive to foster a love of life long learning in each of my students, as well as the ability to use today’s technology in order to prepare them for their futures not only as students but as productive members of our society.

My classroom is student centered,  meaning that the whole day is not spent listening to me talk. As the teacher I deliver information for my students to work with. In completing tasks, my students are either working independently, in pairs or in small groups with my guidance and supervision. There is a lot of discussion, but more student led than teacher led. It is my goal to help my students become less dependent upon their teacher to complete tasks and become independent thinkers and responsible students.

I am a firm believer in teaching 21st Century skills. My students are using technology in class whenever possible, despite limitations on resources. It is my goal to show my students how technology can be used in a variety of ways, from skills practice to content creation. Technology has more uses than taking tests or playing games. It can be used to create and demonstrate understanding or mastery of any academic subject.
